Great Rivers Greenway is leading a large scale effort to develop a coordinated plan for contiguous and consistent on-road bicycle facilities over the next 20 years throughout the region. Connecting a viable on-road system with the emerging off-road trail system will boost the area’s reputation as a business location, enticing young people to choose the St. Louis region as a place to live, work and play.

Florissant to Celebrate Opening of the Sunset Greenway October 13

The City of Florissant and Great Rivers Greenway will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. on October 13 at the Behlmann/Zykan Nature Lodge in Sunset Park for the Sunset Greenway. This greenway connects downtown Florissant with the Missouri River. This 3.6 mile greenway is the first of the approximately 45 greenways identified in the 2004 Great Rivers Greenway “Building the River Ring” plan to be completed.

Executive Rides Her Bike to Work for the First Time

Mira Tanna, assistant director of the Equal Housing Opportunity Council, recently wrote to our website that she had taken her first bicycle ride to work. It took her about half an hour to ride to Midtown from her home, compared to her normal 12 minutes drive. "But it was worth it," she said of the bike commute.

River des Peres Greenway Graphics Animate a Bus Shelter

Recently explanatory maps and graphics about the River des Peres Greenway were installed at the bus shelters at the Shrewsbury MetroLink station, the end of the Blue Line. Altogether the shelters make a striking display while providing useful information finding and enjoying the nearby greenway.

Dardenne Greenway Features New Native Plantings

Public engagement is a critical component of every GRG project and developing a regional plan for the next five years is no exception. Over the past few weeks, in response to several outreach efforts, including postings in this newsletter, a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) has been established to represent a cross-section of individuals from across GRG's three jurisdictions, St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County.

Featured Map - Sunset Greenway trail in Florissant

Sunset Park is a Florissant park with about 0.6 miles of frontage along the Missouri River. The newest section of trail follows the river, offering spectacular views. The park view of the winter sunset is especially unique in the area. The Florissant Parks Foundation, in cooperation with the City, recently completed the nature lodge in the park as an educational center and rental facility.

Crumbling Brick Pump House to Become Rest and Observation Area

A former water pump house adjacent to the Riverfront Trail and jutting out into the Mississippi River is now being reconstructed to serve as a viewing platform and rest area for cyclists and walkers. Reconstruction of the wall to half height, a new roof, and simple concrete benches inside and will result in a shelter open to the elements—and the great views—for trail users.
